On The Fly Mobile App

Overview

This is a concept for a mobile app designed as a resource for fly fisherman or individuals that are interested in the sport.

The goal of this app is not only to act as a resource for fly fisherman, but to get more people outdoors by offering enough resources for individuals to feel more comfortable trying this new activity.

My Role: Solo designer through end-to-end process: discovery, design, usability, testing and prototyping.

Year: 2022

THE CHALLENGE

To create a mobile app that offers resources to improve the experience of fly fishing, from the amateur to the pro.

Spending time outside is proven to have many health benefits. Studies in the recent years show that about 2% of Americans go fly fishing each year. I believe by offering more resources, more people would be interested in fly fishing and spend more time in nature.

USER RESEARCH

UNDERSTANDING THE USER

After doing some market research on the fishing and outdoor industry, I conducted interviews with 10 people and received 10 surveys. During this primary research I discovered many reasons why people don’t fly fish and narrowed these down to the most common answers.

KEY INSIGHTS

I developed this chart with the three most common pain points to get some ideas out there to move forward with in the iteration and wire-framing stage. These insights helped me develop better ideas to create the best solution.

WIREFRAMING & LOW-FIDELITY PROTOTYPING

During this stage of my process I began to bring all of my ideas to life visually, through paper wireframes and mid-fidelity mockups. My goal was to implement features to improve upon the common pain points I discovered during my research.

LOW-FIDELITY TO HIGH-FIDELITY

Next in my process, I began to transform my mid-fidelity mockups into high-fidelity mockups. Keeping the user in the front of my mind, I’m constantly thinking about how I can better this experience for the user during this process. After plenty of iterations and experimenting with my design I arrived at the final product.

HIGH-FIDELITY MOCKUPS & PROTOTYPE

After refining my solutions through usability testing I ended up with these high-fidelity mockups and my final prototype.

TAKEAWAYS

This was my first UI/UX design project. I had very limited knowledge of UI/UX design and UI/UX design tools at the time. After learning more about UI/UX design I decided to go back and improve the project with my newfound knowledge. The ability to conduct quality research and utilize my improved UI knowledge made a huge difference in the outcome of this project..

  • I gained more confidence conducting usability studies.

  • I learned how much of a difference that continued study and education makes, and I am committed to keep learning.

  • I conducted a lot of UI research to implement trends and learned new techniques.
